Two dead in car accident in Vernon.

At approximately 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Vernon RCMP received a report of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 97 at the 27th Street overpass.

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk said police, BC Ambulance Service and Vernon Fire Rescue attended the location and determined two vehicles were involved.

“Investigation has revealed a southbound vehicle crossed the centre line of the highway and collided with a northbound vehicle,” said Molendyk. “Two female passengers from the first vehicle, aged 22 and 26 from Kelowna, were deceased at the scene of the collision, while a 32-year-old female and 26-year-old male in the second vehicle from Armstrong were transported to hospital with serious, but non life threatening injuries.”

Police and the BC Coroners Service are still investigating the cause of the collision. Names of the deceased are not being released at this time to allow notification of the families and respect for them in this difficult time.

Highway 97 was closed for approximately six hours but has now been re-opened to all traffic.
