Even though school buses are considered the safest way to get to and from school, it's important to follow safety precautions. When driving up to a school bus with flashing signals or an extended stop sign, you must stop until all children are out of the road and the bus begins to move again. Always make sure kids are out of the road, even if the stop sign or flashing signals on the bus aren't working.
"One of the things that we find is that when we are loading and unloading, that's our key area that we want every parent to be really cognezant of and really look for those stop arms out and those stop signs out," says Gary Hough, Fayette County Schools Transportation Director.
But even the children have to keep safety in mind while they are riding on the bus.
"One of the things we always tell the kids the most important thing to do is just sit still in the seat, sit flat in the seat," Hough tells 59News. "Stay faced forward."
